Derrick's World of Wonder

Geoscientist, Woodworker, Photographer

Introduction

As a kid, I was inspired by the rapid intellectual progress brought forth by the European enlightenment.  It represented a period in time where human advancements in science and art took great leaps forward driven by the inherent curiosity of humans.  Many key figures of this period were not artists or scientists or philosophers but all of the above at the same time.  While science is fundamentally a technical field, there is a creativity to it as well, requiring imagination to realize what is possible.  Scientific advances are driven as much by asking, "What if?", as much as they are by the data and observations.  In short, I'm driven by a burning desire to know and understand.

I'm a geoscientist at the University of Adelaide with a focus on global thermal and chemical evolution of the solid Earth.  I specialize in using large multidimensional datasets to find interesting patterns that may reveal deeper underlying truths about the how and why Earth changes.

I'm also an artist and artisan, looking to the fundamental beauty of nature for inspiration.  And I hope to showcase the simplicity and its complexity for myself and others to enjoy.

Blast-off

My youngest son loves space, so it was a great fun to put my lathe to work and make a rocket ship.  I think he has broken the fins on the ship about three times, which are now more epoxy than wood.  But I'm inspired to try again, albeit with a better design.
